DATE OF MOH ACTION: 12/05/1865 Fort Gregg.

 

Apple was born in 1845 at Northampton, Pennsylvania but later moved to West Virginia.

Apple served in the American Civil War in Company I, 12th West Virginia Infantry for the Union Army and reached the rank of coporal. He received the Medal of Honor on May 12, 1865 for his actions at Fort Gragg during the Third Battle of Petersburg.

 

Apple moved to Elgin, Illinois after the war, where he became the city's fire marshal.

 

MOH CITATION:

 

Conspicuous gallantry as color bearer in the assault on Fort Gregg.
