Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Pensacola, North Carolina, He served as a Sergeant in Company 1, 22nd Infantry, US Army. In actions at San Isidro, Luzon, Philippine Islands, October 1899, Sergeant Ray in command of a detachment captured a bridge. He held the position against a superior force of enemy insurgents, which enabled the following support companies to come up and cross. For distinguished gallantry in the hace of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on April 18, 1902.
