Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Union Army as a Sergeant in Company D, 7th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action near Richmond, Virginia in September 1864. In 1896, he published a history of his regiment under the title The Seventh Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers in the War of the Rebellion.
