DATE OF MOH ACTION: 13/02/1879 USS Constitution.

 

Peacetime Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Canada, he served as a Carpenter's Mate in the US Navy. During a heavy gale at sea on February 13, 1879, the U.S.S. Constitution was faultering due to a damaged rudder. Carpenter's Mate Williams volunteered and my himself went over the stern of the ship and performed the important repair work on her rudder. For his bravery and service to his ship, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on October 18, 1884.

 

MOH CITATION:

 

For going over the stern of the U.S.S. Constitution, at sea, 13 February 1879, during a heavy gale, and performing important carpenter's work upon her rudder.
