Spanish-American War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Navy during the War with Spain as a Seaman on board the "USS Nahville". He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His Medal was awarded to him on July 7, 1899.

On board the U.S.S. Nashville during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Van Etten displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this period.
