DATE OF MOH ACTION: 17/06/1864 Petersburg, Virginia.

 

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in England, he immigrated to the United States in 1850. He was mustered in as a Private in Company K, 29th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on May 16, 1864. A month later, on June 17, 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia, he performed the brave deed that would have him awarded the Medal of Honor.

 

He was discharged due to disability from his wounds on September 19, 1864. His Medal was awarded to him on September 24, 1897.

 

MOH CITATION:

 

The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private John H. Harbourne, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 17 June 1864, while serving with Company K, 29th Massachusetts Infantry, in action at Petersburg, Virginia, for capture of flag along with three enemy men.
