Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He is buried under the name of John McKenzie. He served as a Corporal in the Union Army in Company B, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 18, 1864 at Spotsylvania, Virginia.

Seized the colors, the color bearer having been shot, and with great gallantry succeeded in saving them from capture.
