Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as Captain and commander of Company A, 13th Vermont Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery on the 2nd Day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 2, 1863).

Gallantry in the recapture of 4 guns and the capture of 2 additional guns from the enemy; also the capture of a number of prisoners.
