Indian Wars Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. He served as a Sergeant, Company D, 5th U.S. Cavalry. On 29 September 1879, Sgt. Lawton volunteered to accompany and lead a small detachment at Milk River, Colorado. Through coolness and steadiness under hostile enemy fire Sgt. Lawton completed a very dangerous mission. His Medal of Honor was awarded 7 June 1880.
