DATE OF MOH ACTION: 02/04/1865 Sutherland Station, Virginia.

 

He served as a Private in Company E, 148th Pennsylvania Infantry, Union Army. In actions at Sutherland Station, Virginia on April 2, 1865, Private Phillips captured a battle flag from the Confederate Army. For bravery in the face of the emeny, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on May 10, 1865.

The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Josiah Phillips, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 2 April 1865, while serving with Company E, 148th Pennsylvania Infantry, in action at Sutherland Station, Virginia, for capture of flag
