b. 02/04/1979 Waratah, Australia.
He was born in 1979, the younger son of a Australian Vietnam veteran. He enlisted in the Australian Army in 2002 and was posted to 3 Squadron in 2004. He then saw action in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan where he was awarded his VC for Australia.
On 2nd September 2008, he was patrolling with Afghan and US Forces, when they were ambushed by a well prepared and larger Taliban force. The ambush began with sustained machine gun and rocjket grenade attacks. This attack caused several casualties. Donaldson then deliberately exposed himself to enemy fire to draw it away from his injured comrades. This allowed the opportunity for his comrades to be moved to cover. When they attempted to withdraw from the ambush, they noticed that an Afghan interpreter was wounded and not on the vehicles. Donaldson crossed the 80 metres to the wounded man under heavy fire, and carried him back to the vehicle where he administered first aid.
