DATE OF MOH ACTION: 20/07/1864 Peach Tree Creek, Georgia.

 

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Williamstown, Ohio, on December 13, 1845, he served as a Private in Company C, 82nd Ohio Infantry, Union Army. In actions against Confederate forces at Peach Tree Creek, Georgia, on July 20, 1864, Private Williams volunteered to go out and make a reconnaissance of the enemy positions. He went far beyond the safety of his own lines and then returned with important information. He also risked his life by going to the aid of a wounded comrade. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on June 19, 1894.

 

MOH CITATION:

 

The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private William Haliday Williams, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 20 July 1864, while serving with Company C, 82d Ohio Infantry, in action at Peach Tree Creek, Georgia. Private Williams voluntarily went beyond the lines to observe the enemy; also aided a wounded comrade.
