Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Hancock County, Ohio, he served as a Private in Company B, 21st Ohio Infantry, Union Army. In actions at Stones River, Tennessee, on December 31, 1862, while his company was retreating, he went back under a heavy fire and rescued a wounded comrade. He later achivied the rank of Captain and was awarded the Medal of Honor on September 17, 1897. After the war, he served as a clerk for the Department of Treasury in Washington D.C.
